QUITO, May 13 (Xinhua) -- Ecuador reported on Thursday 1,151 new COVID-19 infections and 86 more deaths in the past 24 hours, bringing the caseload to 405,783 and death toll to 14,193, the Ministry of Public Health said.

Another 5,249 deaths are considered to be COVID-19 related, but not verified, according to the ministry.

The province of Pichincha led in new infections in the last day with 415 cases, including 393 in the capital Quito, the epicenter of the pandemic in the South American country.

Since April 23, 16 provinces in Ecuador that were registering a growing number of infections have been under a state of emergency decreed by the government to curb the rise in cases and avoid the collapse of the health system.

The measure, which includes a night curfew and a weekend lockdown, will last until May 20 and is responsible for a 3-percent reduction in the occupation of intensive care unit beds in these areas, according to the latest report from the ministry.

However, authorities are warning the population not to lower its guard regarding protective measures, due to the fact that some of the most contagious variants of the coronavirus are now circulating in the country.

Meanwhile, the national vaccination plan against COVID-19 had administered more than 1.3 million doses to people in priority groups and the elderly as of May 11.
