Cuba surpasses 120,000 total COVID-19 cases

HAVANA, May 13 (Xinhua) -- Cuba surpassed 120,000 accumulated COVID-19 cases on Thursday, after reporting 1,186 infections in one day and bringing the total to 120,561, the Ministry of Public Health said, adding that there were also another 10 deaths, to total 778.

Of the new infections reported, 48 were imported cases, the ministry's national director of hygiene and epidemiology Francisco Duran said.

Havana reported 690 cases and has the highest incidence rate of 447.2 per 100,000 inhabitants in the country.

Since Wednesday, the ministry has been carrying out a mass vaccination campaign in seven of Havana's municipalities, a process that will continue during the second half of the month in the western provinces of Pinar del Rio and Matanzas, as well as Santiago de Cuba and the Special Municipality of Isla de la Juventud.

The most advanced Cuban vaccine candidates, Soberana-02 and Abdala, are being used in the campaign, although the island has three others, Soberana-01 and Soberana Plus, as well as Mambisa, in different phases of clinical trials.
