Equity markets in Asia all close in negative territory

SYDNEY, Australia - Stocks were lower across the board in Asia on Thursday, while the U.S. dollar gained new ground.

Japan's Nikkei 225 fell 132.23 points or 0.62% to close at 21,151.15 on Thursday.

In China, the Shanghai Composite tumbled 39.19 points or 1.36% to 2,852.52.

The Australian All Ords had its first down day for the week, losing 13.80 points or 0.21% to 6,584.30.

The euro fell to 1.1146, while the British pound also gave up ground in Asia on Thursday - finishing the Sydney session at around 1.2613.

The Japanese yen was slightly firmer at 110.24, while the Swiss franc was little changed at 1.0093.

The Canadian dollar inched down to 1.3456.

The Australian dollar was easier at 0.6870. The N ew Zealand dollar fell to 0.6488.

Overnight on Wall Street, the Dow Jones Industrial Average gave up 100.85 points or 0.39% to close at 25,776.48.

The Standard and Poor's 500 dropped 8.1 points or 0.28% to 2,856.26.

The Nasdaq Composite fell 34.88 points or 0.45% to 7,750.84.
