Asian equity markets on the back foot

SYDNEY, Australia - Asian equity markets were lower on Tuesday across the board.

All the major indices were trading in the red well into the day.

The Australian stock market, was epitomised by the Australian All Ordinaries, which lost 14.60 points or 0.23% to close at 6,246.00.

In Tokyo the Nikkei 225 shed 213.45 points or 0.99% to 21,290.24.

In late trading in China, the Shanghai Composite was down 37.41 points or 1.22% at 3,022.90.

In mid-afternoon trading in Hong Kong, the Hang Seng was off 161.10 points or 0.56% at 28,759.24.

The U.S. dollar was little changed. Against the euro it was a touch weaker at 1.1285. The British pound remained out of favour, but was holding steady at 1.3067.

The Japanese yen was unmoved at 111.29.

The Swiss franc was slightly firmer at 1.0074.

The Canadian dollar was unchanged at 1.3361.

The Australian and New Zealand dollars each lost a quarter-of-a-cent to 0.7059 and 0.6854 respectively.
