Police and gunmen die in Istanbul battle

An armed attack on the United States consulate in Istanbul in Turkey has resulted in the deaths of three policemen and three gunmen.

One of the police officers died at the scene of the fifteen minute fight.

The two others died of their wounds at a nearby hospital.

Four gunmen drove in a car to the high-walled consulate and opened fire on security personnel.

While three of the gunmen were killed, one managed to drive away.

Police have launched an operation to capture the armed assailant.
